Parliamentary Estate
View project
During the lifecycle of a building, the costs of operation and maintenance far outweigh any initial investment and there is always the need to maximise efficiency and manage costs.
Having up-to-date geospatial information is a key element of this, whether it supports the platform in a CAFM system or provides a BIM reference.
Plowman Craven has provided the expertise and experience to help preserve the world’s heritage buildings since 1964. We’re experienced in providing complete digital photographic archives of structures, sites, objects and works of art. We utilise the latest techniques to create accurate, complex and realistic 3D models which record and monitor deterioration within historic structures.
Having been the surveyor of choice for the Houses of Parliament since the 1970s, Plowman Craven has a rich history of scanning, measuring and documenting this UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2015, we were awarded the coveted five-year framework contract to survey the entire Parliamentary Estate, as part of the Restoration and Renewal Programme. With more than 2,000 rooms in the main Parliament building alone, this was a mammoth task. We also provided a range of additional services including sewer surveys, asbestos tests and structural monitoring.
The measurement data captured was used to produce a comprehensive 3D model that enables interested parties to ‘virtually’ explore every inch of the Parliamentary Estate, extracting measurements and viewing all elements in fine detail. The 3D model was supported by thousands of high-resolution panoramic photographs that provide a full visual record of the condition of the Estate, enabling the planning, design and construction phases to proceed.
The challenges of the task were myriad, with confined spaces, inaccessible roof areas, differing floor levels, architectural treasures, data security and, of course, the thousands of people who work there all needing to be safely dealt with.
The team is now engaged with another prestigious client, with work for The Royal Household taking place at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
