Case Study - Priority School Building & Free School Programme
What's the Story?
The Priority School Building Programme (PSBP) and Free Schools Programme is a £4.4bn undertaking to rebuild and refurbish school buildings across the country.
The first phase covered 260 schools, with completion expected by the end of 2017. A further 277 schools feature in phase two (PSBP2), with all of the refurbished buildings due to open in 2021.
Plowman Craven provided a full spectrum of surveying and measuring services to help identify the buildings most in need of attention in PSBP2. Providing 10 different survey types, including environmental, we collaborated closely with both the client and schools to provide a comprehensive measurement and consultancy service that helped save time and money.
As with any project where buildings are occupied, the principal consideration is disruption and attempts to minimise it. Working at schools during term time presented a particular challenge but we collaborated closely with schools in order to establish working plans that would enable our teams to access the right areas at the right time.
Mobilising both our environmental experts and our surveyors at the same time reduced the burden of access arrangement on the Client and also reduced disruption on the sites which were being surveyed.
Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Arboricultural Constraints Surveys, Asbestos Management and Preliminary Flood Risk Appraisals have and are being completed across the sites to support feasibility studies on the school sites with potential to complete follow up surveys where risks are identified.
Environmental Monitoring
Our consultative approach and participation during the design phases of a development means we’re well placed to provide expert advice on noise, dust, air quality and vibration monitoring through our in-house Environmental Planning division.
Combining our core services enables us to offer a unique service bundle to the Construction and Engineering industries that can help minimise environmental risks for clients, including reputational damage, potential legal action and costly delays due to local authority restrictions.
