- So, what exactly do you do then?
-
I look after the client engagement team within the Property Management team working with our client engagement managers and the project support team to ensure the clients are looked after in a professional and courteous manner. Our work is really about measuring buildings so that clients know exactly how much space they have to sell or let. Accuracy is vital… as is making sure we deliver the information how and when clients need it.
- What does a typical day look like?
-
There’s no such thing! Generally, we’ll have a team catch-up first thing to discuss inbound enquiries, and resource pinch-points to ensure timely delivery. This is followed by a review of projects to see where each one is. My job also involves helping with updating clients and issuing proposals. It’s very varied.
- What do you like most about your job?
-
There are so many things, but particularly it’s working closely with the people around me, using skills developed in previous roles and helping clients’ projects to succeed. There’s nothing more rewarding then seeing something you worked on getting national press coverage.
- What’s your favourite project been?
-
Bit of an obscure one, but a job I really enjoyed was The Galleria in Abu Dhabi. I was a surveyor back then and was fortunate enough to have made several trips out to work on the site. Swapping the freezing conditions of the UK for a bit of winter sun was great… plus I did actually learn quite a lot as well.
- What’s your proudest achievement?
-
Probably being recognised as more than just a surveyor – thankfully the Directors and management saw something in me and helped me to develop by promoting me to Junior Project Manager.
- Why did you choose this field of work?
-
I saw an advert in the local paper for a junior surveyor role and it sounded interesting, being a mix of office and field-based work… so I went for it! I learned a lot at a previous company and it made sense for me to join the biggest and best survey company when the opportunity came about. I’ve never looked back.
- What are the most important attributes for your role?
-
Being calm, understanding, organised and certainly thick-skinned. Clients can (rightly) be very exacting and demanding. You have to be able to keep a cool head when the pressure inevitably hits.
- Best thing about working for Plowman Craven?
-
The company allows you to develop and learn new skills whilst trusting you to just get on with what you are supposed to be doing. It’s just the right blend of guidance and autonomy.
- What are you like to work with?
-
Tricky this one! I’m passionate about what I do and will do everything I can for my clients. I expect a lot from the people I work with. I suppose you could say I’m quite demanding!
- What are you interested in outside work?
-
You could say I have a passion for understanding how things are engineered and what makes them work. I’m definitely working at the right company.
